South Africa Men’s Sevens Head Coach Neil Powell will be the guest coach for the Canada Sevens Coaching Professional Development Workshop on Wednesday, March 8.

Powell has been head coach of South Africa since October 2013. In his first season in charge, South Africa went on to win two tournaments on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series circuit that led to South Africa finishing second overall in the season standings, a position they’ve finished the past four seasons. South Africa also tasted success with a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio where South Africa finished third. Powell has guided South Africa to eight cup victories.

Powell is a former member and captain of the Blitzboks where he won 32 caps during his career on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series stage. He won a bronze medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

“South Africa is one of the best teams in the world at transitioning from defense to attack and this workshop is a great opportunity for coaches to get an insight into how South Africa do this so well,” said Dustin Hopkins, Rugby Canada’s Manager of National Development. “Coaches will be able to take some ideas and use them back in their club and school environment after chatting with Neil and learning from his ‘How to Coach Transition Rugby’ workshop.”
