A LOOK BACK AT THE 2016-2017 HSBC WORLD RUGBY WOMENS SEVENS SERIES

The HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series is back in action in just a few short weeks, but before we set our sights on what’s to come in 2018, let’s reflect on the success the Canadian Women’s Sevens squad had in 2016-2017. It was surely a year to remember!

Dubai

Like the 2018 series, last year’s tournament kicked off in Dubai. Canada was drawn into Pool C facing England, Spain and Brazil. They ultimately fell short in this stop of the series finishing 6th overall.

Sydney

Off the heels of a slow start in Dubai, this squad was able to come out guns blazing in Sydney, ultimately defeating USA 21-17 in the final match, crowning them this stops championship team!! HECK YES.

Las Vegas

Although Las Vegas will not be returning as a series stop for 2018, Canada was able to continue their domination in the series finishing third. Team Canada standout, Ghislaine Landry, scored a try during this stop that officially made her the all-time leading point scorer in the series!

Kitakyushu

Following Las Vegas, the team headed to Kitakyushu Japan. Drawn into pool C, Canada had a challenging pool, facing England, Spain and USA. They faced USA once again in the final match of the pool, coming out with a 29-12 victory. Team Canada went head to head with the dominant New Zealand squad in the final match, but claimed second in an incredibly close 17-14 defeat.

Langford

Canada returned to home turf playing at Westhills Stadium in Langford, BC. They were drawn into pool B, facing France, Russia and Brazil in the first round. Once again they met New Zealand in the final match falling 7-17 to the kiwis.

Clermont

The series had it’s final stop in Clermont France where Canada finished strong with another podium spot next to 1st place New Zealand and Second place finishers, Australia. This stop holds great significance to team Canada captain, Ghislaine Landry, as she scored her 100th try for the tournament in a match against Ireland. Relive her 100th try here!

Don’t forget! The 2017-2018 series kicks off November 30th in Dubai. Follow Canada Sevens on social media to keep up with all the action!
