LANGFORD, BC (October 24, 2016) — The 2017 HSBC Canada Women’s Sevens tournament will return to Westhills Stadium in Langford, BC May 27-28, 2017, and will feature twelve of the world’s best women’s rugby sevens teams. Tournament passes go on sale to Early Bird registrants at 10am on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, followed by general public on-sale beginning 10am Tuesday, November 1, 2016. Tournament passes start at just $40 in general admission sections for access to all the action on both Saturday and Sunday.

This is the third straight year Canada has hosted a leg of the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series at the home of Canadian Rugby on Vancouver Island. Fans can register for the HSBC Canada Women’s Early Bird list until 11:59pm on October 24th at www.canadasevens.com/womens.  Registered fans will receive an exclusive seven-day window to purchase their tickets before the general public. Tournament organizers have been overwhelmed with early interest in ticket purchase opportunities from fans across the country, given Team Canada’s historic performance this summer in Rio.

“Our government is proud to support rugby through investments in our Canadian athletes and Rugby Canada,” said the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities. “Seeing the Canadian women win the bronze medal this summer at the first-ever Olympic rugby sevens competition was one of our country’s proudest moments. Now, Canadians will have a chance to see their team in action on home soil at the 2017 HSBC Canada Women’s Sevens tournament. During the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017, it will provide us with another chance to celebrate our high-performance athletes, who inspire Canadians to engage in sport and physical activity.”

This year, the tournament will mark the first time the Women’s rugby sevens team plays in front of a home crowd since winning bronze at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro this past August. The team has proven, on the sport’s biggest stage, that they are among the best rugby sevens teams in the world and they will be looking to be crowned champions here at home as they compete against gold medallists Australia, silver medallists New Zealand, and nine other rugby nations.

“The Province is pleased to support the return of the HSBC Canada Women’s Sevens tournament,” stated Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour, Shirley Bond. “It’s a great chance to see our Olympic medal winning women’s rugby team in action. Some of the four million visitors that have come to B.C. so far this year came here in April for the second Canada Women’s Sevens tournament. It’s events like this that are helping to promote incredible growth in tourism in British Columbia supporting jobs, and keeping our province diverse, strong and growing.”

The women’s success at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games brought with it immense pride to all Canadians and is yet another step forward in rugby’s continuous growth in Canada. The team showed great determination, poise and teamwork to win the bronze in Rio, proving to the world that they can contend with the top international teams. The two-day event in Langford will be an opportunity to see Canada’s women’s sevens team face the best rugby nations in the world right here in British Columbia, and give Canadians the chance to support their women as they look to build upon their Olympic success.

“Fresh off a bronze medal-winning performance at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, we are very excited to cheer on the home side when Canada’s women’s rugby sevens team hosts the Canadian leg of the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series,” Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, Peter Fassbender said. “Langford has been a tremendous host throughout the past two years of competition and 2017 will once again bring many of the world’s top sides to British Columbia.”

As part of the on-sale announcement today, the Canadian Olympic women’s rugby sevens team was honoured in a presentation by Langford Mayor, Stewart Young, “We are proud of the Canadian women’s rugby sevens team’s great achievement at the Rio Olympics, and Langford looks forward to hosting the HSBC Canada Women’s Sevens tournament in 2017.”

The HSBC Canada Women’s Sevens is also made possible by global sponsors HSBC and DHL as well as premier partner The Butchart Gardens who has supported Rugby Canada for over a decade and signature partners Canada’s Dairy Farmers and Tourism Victoria.
